Small Hotels in Los Cabos

Six great places to stay in the San José del Cabo, Baja California, Mexico area:

El Delphin Blanco

This charming hostelry is in the small village of La Playita, a mile out of San José del Cabo. It offers the convenience of being close to town and a quiet location on the beach.

Continue on the dirt road away from town (southeast) on the way towards La Fortuna, Bahia Los Frailes, and Cabo Pulmo, along the East Cape, less than a quarter mile down the dirt road from the Corona beer store, take a right at the fork just past "Los Ricardos" restaurant. At the first juncture make a left and you come to a small, fenced-in mini-village. There are 3 cabañas with communal bathrooms and 2 casitas with private bathrooms.

The rooms have palapa roofs, are tastefully decorated, and there are hammocks and chairs and a grassy area out front. You can also camp with your own tent. BBQ and outdoor kitchen. The owner, Osa, a Swedish woman, will sit down and help you plan your stay, whether it involves fishing, snorkeling, arroyo exploring, or just lying in the warm sun. This is a favorite place among Europeans. Call for reservations, especially if you plan on staying during high season.

La Playita Resort

The hotel is 100 yards from a vast beach great for swimming or bodysurfing (when the surf isn't too big). La Playita caters to fishing fanatics and it is on the town's main fishing beach. (A local boat (panga), which can take 4 people, is available.) To buy fresh fish you can go to the fish cleaning area around noon and see what the catch of the day is. La Playita's restaurant is famous for its seafood platters and indoor/outdoor patio.

There are also two Mariscos resataurants in town, both good, and a small stand on a back street alongside the hotel that serves great fish tacos. The hotel rooms are immaculate, large rooms with queen size beds, tile floors, and big showers. The outer common balcony is an ideal place for sunset viewing. CNN and HBO on the TV. There are fans and air conditioning, and a nice pool.

Maxey’s at Shipwrecks

For those looking for a remote getaway, Maxey’s At Shipwrecks is 12 miles from San José del Cabo on the road to Cabo Pulmo. The road is dirt and slow traveling, with breathtaking views. Watch out for burros! In 40 minutes or so, turn left at the sign that says, “Maxey.” Enter through the driveway gate and park at the top of the hill. Remember to close the gate.

This is a rustic place, with one private room and windows overlooking the ocean and the desert. The room has a tile floor and palm-thatched roof. Queen-sized bed, desk, outside patio. Open-air stone shower has great views and it’s a short walk to the privy.

The kitchen is located at the lower main palapa, where breakfast is served at the ocean view table. Relax with your coffee and watch the many local birds. Other meals available upon request at additional charge. The desert is a hiker’s paradise, and the beach is a 5-minute walk where you can swim, surf, boogie board and beachcomb along the pristine sands. Several old shipwrecks are in the area for great snorkeling. Occasionally, there are late afternoon volleyball games. Return before dusk for margaritas and amazing desert sunsets from the privacy of your room. After dark, star gaze in the open skies and listen to the coyotes.

Airport pickup available, including a stop for supplies. Remember to bring a tennis ball for the dog. Reservations in advance required.
