A Trip to Telluride, Colorado - Part 2

In and around Telluride, Colorado late October 2004:

Great stone masonry

Skateboard/snowboard dude's house in downtown Telluride, surrounded by million $ condos. Check peaks behind his house.

Downhill racer with heavy duty ($6k) downhill bike. Bikers take the town's free (!) gondola to the top of the mountain and bomb down.

Chuck and Kathy Kroger's house. Multi-level, good-feeling, nice rugs, great kitchen, work spaces, Chuck's metal-working shop on a lower level, Kathy's silk-dyeing operation in one room, the office of their Bone Construction.

Chuck

Chuck's a master welder and metal worker. At left an experimental stool. At right, witty (and solid) steps made out of sections of old mining machinery gears. I'm going back next year to interview and shoot pix of Chuck and some other Colorado builders for our forthcoming new book, BUILDERS.

A GOOD DAY YESTERDAY
Yesterday I came home from San Francisco along the coast. It was a sunny afternoon and I got to the bluffs above Stinson beach and pulled over to enjoy the view and afternoon sunshine. I was listening to an extraordinary CD: Philip Hii: Johann Sebastian Bach/New Transcriptions for Guitar. Hii plays on a level with Yo Yo Ma. His technique is unbelievable. You just can't believe anyone could play notes that fast on the guitar. The interpretations are wonderful. At times he sounds like a piano. In one fugue I would swear it's a harpsichord. I sat still in the sunshine just outside the truck, closed my eyes and let the music wash through me. If you are a guitar player (hear me, Charlie?) or have ever been touched by Bach, get this CD!

Then as I got closer to home and checked the local surf spot, the waves looked good and for some reason very few guys were out. Lew and Rick were waiting for me to have a meeting, but I bailed. Surfer irresponsibility. I stayed out for about 2 hours. It was small, but 4 of us sat out in the setting sun, taking turns on the small lefts. We stayed in the water until the sun went down and the moon came up.
